First, determines if you are using Local Audio Path (LAP) or OSC.

  • The SPAT Send and Return plugins use LAP automation when the « Enable » of the plugin is activated, i.e. when the audio is sent to SPAT Revolution via the plugin.
  • When the LAP is deactivated, i.e. the “Enable” button is off, OSC is used to control the objects.
  • OSC is used always used for the SPAT Room plugins.

Automation reading with Local Audio Path

  • Ensure your DAW and the wanted track automation status are set to “Read” or “Touch”.
  • On the « Item» page on SPAT Revolution, check if the “Automation” field of the wanted source is enabled. This parameter allows disabling the incoming automation input.
  • If the automation does not work, on the SPAT plugin, please check if the field « Publish changes in main thread » is set according to the following wanted status for your DAW:
    • ON: Ableton Live, ProTools, Steinberg products (Cubase, Nuendo, Wavelab), StudioOne
    • OFF: all others
  • Finally, check if the source index in SPAT Revolution and the plugin source index are the same. It can sometimes, according to the DAW, causes issues.

If it doesn’t work, please contact us.

Automation reading with OSC

  • Make sure the OSC is configured on both SPAT Revolution and SPAT plugin sides, i.e. the address IP and the port number are set. Use 127.0.0.1 if DAW and SPAT Revolution are on the same machine.
  • On SPAT Revolution, make sure OSC Enable is checked.
  • To check if SPAT Revolution receives the OSC data sent by the plugin, enable the “Command log” on the OSC preferences panel, then open the terminal (menu Help, or F7). The OSC input message will be shown in it. If no OSC input message is displayed, there has been an error configuring the address and port.
  • Make sure the plugin source index and the source remote index in SPAT are the same. On SPAT Revolution side, the remote index is located on the Item page.
  • On the « Item» page of SPAT Revolution, make sure « Remote » is on for the wanted sources.

When using the Local Audio Path in Nuendo, the block size indicated on Nuendo can differ from the one indicated on SPAT Revolution.

To prevent some playbacks errors and glitches, Nuendo introduces the “ASIO-Guard” (more details about it in this dedicated article). This will allow to use the block size given to Nuendo for the “time-critical” operation (like track with monitoring option activated), but a larger one for the other. This buffer depends on the ASIO-guard level (typically, 256 for “low”, 512 for “normal” and 1024 for high in 48kHz).

Be sure to deactivate this ASIO-guard to use the same block size for all tracks, and for the block size to match the driver one.

Into SPAT Revolution, it is possible to use an Ambisonic microphone as input.

SPAT Revolution only accepts 1st order microphones. Most of the time, ambisonic microphones output A-Format, which is a raw format (not encoded). Accepted microphones are grouped into two groups, defined by the channel order:

  • Type I, represented by TSL Soundfield (ST250, ST450, SPS200), Core Sound TetraMic, Sennheiser Ambeo, and Rode NT-SF1 microphone. The channel order is Front Left Up, Front Right Down, Back Left Down, and Back Right Up.
  • Type II, represented by DPA-4 microphone and Oktava MK4012. The channel order is Front Left Down, Front Right Up, Back Left Up, Back Right Down.

Note that some recording devices like the Zoom H2n could output B-Format or HOA.

Careful: Selecting a microphone of the dedicated may not be optimum be could be simpler to test. We strongly recommend using the company plugin or software to encode the audio data in B-Format or HOA 1st order AmbiX.

If your microphone is not listed but has the same channel order as the one before, you can use one similar microphone temporarily, and contact us: you can provide information to help us to complete the list.

The 22.09 update, the first paid upgrade since SPAT Revolution was released in 2017, requires a new license.

All our software licenses includes a 1-year Service License Agreement (SLA) with free support and free upgrades. Customers with a SPAT Revolution license activated from September 1st 2021, automatically should have received the 22.09 update licenses (with surrender of the previous license) in their iLok license manager.

In order to complete the upgrade, you will need to surrender the license you currently hold in exchange for the new SPAT Revolution license. The previous license, now renamed SPAT Revolution Essential 22.02 and SPAT Revolution Ultimate 22.02, will still be included in your new license bundle for backward software build access.

In order to proceed with this, you need to have your iLok keys or machine connected to the iLok manager.

If you currently own multiple licenses of SPAT Revolution, it is recommended to do the operation in a single batch. This doesn’t impose to change anything on the currently installed software on the computer station but simply to have all physical iLok keys connected with the iLok manager to complete the surrender process or simply log in with the iLok manager on each computer station and complete the surrender.

How to monitor HOA streams in binaural with SPAT Revolution? https://www.flux.audio/knowledge-base/how-to-monitor-hoa-streams-in-binaural-with-spat-revolution/ Tue, 15 Feb 2022 11:58:35 +0000 https://www.flux.audio/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&p=20709 In SPAT Revolution, you can monitor any audio stream in binaural, using a ‘binaural monitoring’ block. In the case of HOA, an additional transcoding is required as ‘binaural monitoring’ only works with channel based stream. The transcoder output format is automatically set as soon as it is connected to a ‘binaural monitoring’ block.

In theory, any head-tracking device that can bridge its data to OSC can work with SPAT Revolution. The software supports individual OSC messages for /yaw, /pitch, and /roll or packed /ypr as a single composite OSC message containing three floats.

These parameters are:

  • yaw | Yaw angle in degrees [increasing clockwise]
  • pitch | Pitch angle in degrees [increasing upwards]
  • roll | Roll angle in degrees [increasing clockwise]

An example of a packed message for controlling the listener of room 1 would be:

/room/1/ypr

The Supperware Ltd Head Tracker 1 USB-powered 3D head motion sensor for immersive audio professionals is a tested unit with SPAT Revolution using the Bridgehead Windows and macOS application.

The attached script file is a file that can be simply used with Bridgehead application or customized (reversing the polarity, rotating the scene, using individual messages) to the user preferences.

The files get located in the user folder under /Library/Bridgehead (macOS)  or \AppData\Roaming\Bridgehead in Windows.
